“The further time takes you away from a situation, the less important it becomes until, finally, it’s nonexistent.”

This is the thought that came into my head just before I was completely awake this morning. It’s a sign and a prophecy. And already so true in so many ways.

Photo Hunt 190: Curved

with 6 comments

I took this photo in the chapel of The St. Roch Shrine and Cemetery here in New Orleans. The chapel is one of my favorite spaces in the city because of the feeling of calm I experience when I visit.

At the height of the yellow fever epidemic of 1867, a German priest named Rev. Peter Leonard Thevis arrived in New Orleans. Faced with the severity of the yellow fever epidemic, he turned to God invoking the intercession of St. Roch, the patron of good health. He promised that if no one in his parish should die from the fever, he would erect a chapel in honor of the Saint. Amazingly, not one member of Holy Trinity died from yellow fever, either in the epidemic of 1867 or 1878.

Photo Hunt 134: Blue

with 10 comments

(St. Francis of Assisi Church,631 State Street, New Orleans )

It’s been quite a while since I participated in Photo Hunt but I do still check out the photo’s most week-ends. Today’s subject is “blue”. TN Chick writes that she got an email from a “William” accusing her of hi-jacking Saturdays for her hunt and saying she needs to “cut some other folks some slack”.
William. Your silly comments just inspired me to join the hunt again.

The photo above is one of a series of shots I took of St. Francis of Asisi church in New Orleans which has been serving it’s parish for over 110 years. It was a beautiful day with the clearest, bluest skies that contrasted beautifully with the brick of the church. We have so many old and beautiful churches here and I highly recommend visitors to our city to venture out to find them and visit. St. Louis Cathedral isn’t the only church in the city, ya know. :)

One Person *Can* Make a Difference

with 2 comments

To anyone who has used the excuse that one voice or one person can’t make a difference against injustice in this world, I say read this.

This won’t be a long post and it’s mainly for my out-of-town readers who are interested in the recovery process in this city. Everyone here in New Orleans concerned about the inequities and corruption in our city post-Katrina, about the struggle of our fellow citizens to rebuild and remediate their homes so they can come home, about the poor and elderly who have been at the mercy of crooked contractors and an inept city government, about corruption in our public schools….all New Orleanians who work hard every day in their own ways to make this city a better place to live know who Karen Gadbois is.

For those who don’t, read the New York Times article I linked to above to see how one woman exposed the shameful exploitation of our city’s poor by the very organization that was set up to help them rebuild their homes destroyed by The Federal Flood after Hurricane Katrina passed through the city 3 years ago.

Read how one person can make a difference and think of her when you cynically say there’s nothing YOU can do to change your world.

Shotgun!

Photo of Shotgun on Tchoupitoulas by me.

From Wikipedia: The term “shotgun house,” which was in use by 1903 but became more common after about 1940, is often said to come from the saying that one could fire a shotgun through the front door and the pellets would fly cleanly through the house and out the back door (since all the doors are on the same side of the house). Another reputed source of the name is that many were built out of crates, i.e. old shotgun-shell crates, and those made for other purposes.

I love shot gun houses. I love the simplicity of them—-the rooms all in a row. Tidy little front gardens like this one with the beautiful Japanese Magnolia in bloom.

Serene on the outside but on the inside? Maybe some Jr Walker tearin’ it up………

I said,Shotgun shoot em for he runs now
Do the jerk baby
Do the jerk now
Hey!

Put on your red dress
And then you go downtown now
I said buy yourself a shotgun now
We’re gonna break it down baby now
We’re gonna load it up baby now

And then you shoot him for he runs now

I said,Shotgun
shoot em for he runs now
Do the jerk baby
Do the jerk now

Hey!

Put on your high heels shoes
I said we’re goin’ down here listen to em play blues
We’re gonna dig potatoes
We’re gonna pick tomatoes

I said,Shotgun shoot em for he runs now
Do the jerk baby
Do the jerk now
Hey!

I said it’s Twine Time
I said it’s Twine Time
I said it’s Twine Time
Hey!
